Building Societies

Beltane Fire Society

Arts Complex St Margaret's House, 151 London Rd, Edinburgh EH7 6AE, UK – 0131 661 5666

Such an established part of the Edinburgh calendar since 1988. How amazing to have a fire festival in the middle of the city centre. Beltane is a charity and mostly relies on volunteers.

Local Chambers of Commerce for EH15 2NP. These can be an extraordinarily effective way of getting into the business community and / or getting things done. Equally they can be entirely useless depending on the chair. If they have networking events associated with them definitely go, and keep going, if you have a business that need local support. What you put in is exactly what you get out. Below is the national site. Watch this slot - it might improve!

Craigmillar Library

Great hub for local community. As well as library also has tea room, public wi-fi access and on site P.C.'s for use. Oh, and you can borrow or read a book on site, among other things.

A fabulous library. The work they do with the local community, particularly youth, must be applauded.

Seafield Community Recycling Centre

Fillyside Rd, Edinburgh EH7 6RD, UK – 0131 529 3030

What can I say? This is a good place to recycle those unwanted bulky and difficult to recycle items. It is a bit out of the way, near Portobello Beach. We dumped sound equipment, old mobile phones, crockery, and lamps. They have domestic recycling spots for old mattresses, televisions, PC equipment, soil, iron, plastics, etc.. It doesn't cost you anything to recycle (we did it by using a taxi, so that was our cost) and you will be glad you did get rid of some stuff like we did. NOTE: if you are recycling difficult to process stuff, or commercial waste, contact the people on the site and they will advise if there is a cost involved Use it, as it is better than being a dumb dumper.

Easy to drop off quickly, helpful staff but dont bring a van or wear tradies overalls as they have strict rules regards trade waste

Portobello Dental Clinic

274 Portobello High St, Edinburgh EH15 2AT, UK – 0131 669 1193

As a nervous patient I was not looking forward to my first dentist visit in many years, and as I had recently moved, but was suffering with some pain, I had to quickly search the Internet to find a practice. Luckily this practice was the one that could see me the soonest, and I have to say that I was very happy with my initial, and subsequent visits. The staff are very friendly and the dentist very quickly put me to ease. I have always been very sceptical about Dentists telling you that fillings, etc are needed (££££) when they are not, but this was not the case, and instead the dentist took time to talk me through what I should be doing to prevent the need for any further work. Overall, a very pleasant experience and I have since convinced my partner to go who had similar reservations about the dentist, but have since been singing their praises.

After suffering from dental anxiety for many years I find going to the dentist extremely hard. But the staff and dentists are also so patient and kind with me, great atmosphere. Would highly recommend the practice.

Craigentinny Dental Care

57 Duddingston Crescent, Edinburgh EH15 3AY, UK – 0131 669 2114

After many years of avoiding treatment due to a fear of needles and poor care at a previous dental practice, I plucked up the courage to seek help at Craigentinny Dental Care. I'm so glad I did. Miriam Figge is an incredible dentist. She always provides explanations for what she is doing, how it is going to feel and what I can expect . She discussed various treatment options so I could make an informed choice of how I wanted my dental treatment plan to go and always provided advice on aftercare that I should follow up at home. Miriam is professional, kind and considered my needs, for example by helping put me at ease when I become overwhelmed by my fear of needles. After six months, I have now finished all of my treatment and feel like I have a renewed sense of confidence. I feel really taken care of and very well looked after over the course of my treatment plan. I don't think anyone likes going to the dentist, but when you experience this level of first class service and care, it can make what is typically a stressful experience - especially for those who fear the dentist, significantly less so. Miriam is a credit to Craigentinny Dental Care and this review is to acknowledge her high levels of professionalism and exceptional standards. I cannot recommend her and Craigentinny Dental Care highly enough. Thank you.

As a nervous patient I am no longer nervous about attending since joining craigentinny 20 years ago. Fraser and the team are always very polite and friendly. I see Fraser and Jill (one of their hygienists) every 6 months between them and the rest of the team they make a dental examination into a nice relaxed experience. I would highly recommend this dental practice- they really look after you. Their work and manner is most definitely 5 star!

Practice itself is very good, and the GPS are really excellent, seem to take a real interest in their patients. It is true to say that sometimes getting through to the staff via phone can be a challenge at times

Excellent attention given to my sister after she fell down a flight of stairs in a shop whilst we were on holiday. Thanks to doctors and staff. However it would help to have an email address as we need to take matters up with our insurers when we return to south Africa as we would like to get details from the very kind paramedics who collected her and took her to ERI

Fantastic dedicated hardworking staff who have to deal with busy departments day in day out.

Congratulations to the staff who have taken the time to make a little garden area around their cabin. I dropped some rubbish off yesterday and it brightened a dull edinburgh evening to see the colourful display. Well done. Staff were pleasant and helpful as usual.

Staff are usually helpful, and it's well organized and signed. It's very convenient to drop lots of rubbish for recycling.

Junkbuster Recycling

8C Bath St, Edinburgh EH15 1EY, UK – 07541 131418

Would highly recommend these guys. I called up Alfie last minute looking for help with clearing out my rental flat and attic prior to selling, he was very responsive and was able to fit me in quickly. The three guys came on time this morning and they quickly and efficiently cleared everything (Even though there was more than I expected - sorry!!). Nice guys as well. Top job!

I used Junkbuster when prepping a second-floor flat for refurbishment. The furniture and all sorts were pretty tatty but they assured me everything would be recycled/re-used and not end up in landfill. They arrived bang on time, Alfie introduced the team and they got to work. It was a competitive rate too. I was delighted!

Give and get free stuff. Here you will find lots of items that people are willing to give away, for FREE! This is instead of taking them to a local landfill site. The aim of this site is to reduce the amount of waste that goes to landfill (20.9 million tonnes of it last year in the UK) and recycling is great news for the environment.
We all know that we need to recycle more - and this is a great way of doing it.

The staff were lovely and knowledgeable, and made sure to bring my food out with gluten free vinegar and other condiments. Thoughtful and thorough, reasonably priced and great service.

Excellent food. Friendly staff with nice size portion. The place is spotlessly clean. Will certainly be back. Well done all

Nursery and Preschools

Forbes Childrens Nursery

12 Claremont Park, Edinburgh EH6 7, UK – 0131 553 5068

Having found out from friends who were parents that the waiting lists for nurseries in Edinburgh was CRAZY long I set about looking for nurseries when I was 6 months pregnant. I lived and worked in Leith so I was looking for a nursery in this neck of Edinburgh's woods. I visited a few nurseries and for me one of the really important factors was outdoor space. I lived in a flat on a main road and I really wanted my little girl to be able to go out and play like I did as a girl. So, when I stumbled upon Forbes Nursery, I fell in love. The nursery is placed opposite Leith Links in what I assume was previously a very very large home / guest house. The nursery is deceptively huge - there are only 4 doors and stairs leading off the entrance way, but it is very tardis like - rooms leading from other rooms. Plenty of space indoors for little tots. An abundance of indoor activities to keep them busy and developing. BUT the clincher - the garden is ENORMOUS! Boasting half an acre of land with lots of little sections, a secret garden, a vegetable patch that the children help to plant, various play park areas, again sectioned for different ages and stages. Lots of outdoor toys - kid heaven! Oh the fun and adventures I could have had in that garden if I was a child again! My daughter is now 2 and has been going for over a year - she loves it - she doesn't want to leave. The carers are so friendly, helpful, caring and informative. My daughter's development has come on leaps and bounds since starting, she's confident, happy, bright and has made so many friends. We have now moved out of the area, but I wouldn't dream of changing her nursery - I cannot recommend this place highly enough!
