The Ramblers Association now have a greatly improved website which is an exceptional rescource for all walkers, hykers and young families wanting to go for walks with young children. This site lists everything from historical walks to guided walks and really audious walks.

Find A Walk Near Me by Walking Britain is a truly excellent and free resource. Just enter where you are or where you would like to walk - and print out directions. The walks are graded and you can buy a specific map of the area at the same time. These are proper OS maps and weather proofed if required.

I always think of walking as one of the few activities you can do for free - and now you can with this guide!

Walking, Hiking and Outdoor Shops

Sports Direct

5, Fort Kinnaird, The Fort Retail Park, Newcraighall Rd, Edinburgh EH15 3RH, UK – 0344 332 5085

Was in sports direct in Fort Kinnaird getting my son size 12 football boots, the young girl was very helpful and friendly....many thanks made it easier parting with £80....;-)

Reasonable prices. Staff are a mixed bag, but generally nice.

Scottish Mountain Gear Ltd

Fisherrow Industrial Estate, Newhailes Rd, Musselburgh EH21 6RU, UK – 0131 653 1310

They made a footprint for my tent which was out of production. The standard was excellent and it has now given excellent service. Thank you.

Had a sleeping bag, cleaned and repaired. Good price for it and a quick turnaround. They kept me informed of its progress all the way through. Now as good as new:)

Mountain Warehouse

36A, Fort Kinnaird Retail Park, Newcraighall Rd, Edinburgh EH15 3HP, UK – 0131 669 9080

Shop is a little cramped with lots of stock on the shop floor. Could not have asked for better service though. Staff were knowledgeable about their products and we were approached by no less than 2 employees for help in our relatively short visit.

Loads of parking but curiously difficult to escape once it gets busy! Decent range of budget gear here - perfect for gifts or random top ups of supplies for your go bag.

WalkingWorld.jpg
Another good one. Walkingworld has huge library of guides with a good selection of walks, of varying lengths and grades, pretty well anywhere in the country. The walks come in an excellent format making them very easy to follow, with photographs to illustrate every important decision point and a proper Ordnance Survey map.

A modist annual subscription gives you unlimited access to all the walks. However you can Pay As Go by downloading indiviual walks..

Camping and Caravaning

Holyrood Park

Queen's Dr, Edinburgh EH8 8HG, UK – 0131 652 8150

Stunning, panoramic views of the city from the mountain summit. We weren't expecting the hike up and down to be 2 hours total but well worth it as we made it in time for the sunset. Wish we went earlier to spend more time up there!

One of the best features of Edinburgh. Large open areas that are great for dogs, paths up the crags or Arthur's Seat that offer amazing views of the city, and bike routes for a fun ride. The road is closed on Sundays, making it even better to let dogs and kids run around, bur it's great any day of the week.

My new home in Edinburgh. Very friendly welcoming , and nice rooms. Breakfast is perfect. Only 20 minutes from Edinburgh city center by bus which stops 10meters along the street of the B&B. The beach is 5 minutes walking distance. Nice places to eat in front of the beach. Would definitely go again !

Beautiful historical house. Very nice hosts. Food excellent. Loved our stay. Near bussed to centre of town.
