The Ramblers Association now have a greatly improved website which is an exceptional rescource for all walkers, hykers and young families wanting to go for walks with young children. This site lists everything from historical walks to guided walks and really audious walks.

Find A Walk Near Me by Walking Britain is a truly excellent and free resource. Just enter where you are or where you would like to walk - and print out directions. The walks are graded and you can buy a specific map of the area at the same time. These are proper OS maps and weather proofed if required.

I always think of walking as one of the few activities you can do for free - and now you can with this guide!

Walking, Hiking and Outdoor Shops

Mountain Warehouse

36A, Fort Kinnaird Retail Park, Newcraighall Rd, Edinburgh EH15 3HP, UK – 0131 669 9080

Shop is a little cramped with lots of stock on the shop floor. Could not have asked for better service though. Staff were knowledgeable about their products and we were approached by no less than 2 employees for help in our relatively short visit.

Nice staff. A little quiet. More people should be here.

Scottish Mountain Gear Ltd

Fisherrow Industrial Estate, Newhailes Rd, Musselburgh EH21 6RU, UK – 0131 653 1310

Had a sleeping bag, cleaned and repaired. Good price for it and a quick turnaround. They kept me informed of its progress all the way through. Now as good as new:)

Excellent efficient service on the altering of our awning very happy customer

Sports Direct

5, Fort Kinnaird, The Fort Retail Park, Newcraighall Rd, Edinburgh EH15 3RH, UK – 0344 332 5085

Was in sports direct in Fort Kinnaird getting my son size 12 football boots, the young girl was very helpful and friendly....many thanks made it easier parting with £80....;-)

Good prices not enough staff

WalkingWorld.jpg
Another good one. Walkingworld has huge library of guides with a good selection of walks, of varying lengths and grades, pretty well anywhere in the country. The walks come in an excellent format making them very easy to follow, with photographs to illustrate every important decision point and a proper Ordnance Survey map.

A modist annual subscription gives you unlimited access to all the walks. However you can Pay As Go by downloading indiviual walks..

Camping and Caravaning

Holyrood Park

Queen's Dr, Edinburgh EH8 8HG, UK – 0131 652 8150

Great place for a nature escape in the city. The highest peak (Arthur's seat) is great for views of the city and a nice climb. The craggs (sharp cliffs facing the centre of Edinburgh) are also a great walk with beautiful views. Yet the smaller peak closer the shore direction is where I spend most my time. It is peaceful, generally with just a few locals walking dogs or running. And you can divert from the paths just a little bit, to find a secluded spot. I often head up here to sit, draw and relax.

Great for walks and short hikes. Wonderful views of the city and the sea (weather permitting ;) ) very windy at the top, so bring a jacket even on a warm day. Many different paths to explore which give you very different views/experiences!

Prestonfield House

Prestonfield House, Priestfield Rd, Edinburgh EH16 5UT, UK – 0131 225 7800

Lovely lovely lovely place! Felt like our own little countryside get away. The property is tranquil and cozy. The staff are friendly and hospitable and the food was an absolute delight. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will definitely be back in the future. The Benjamin Franklin Suite is a must

An amazing manor house. I never knew about this place until a local took me there. So much history in the house, the staff were really helpful answering my questions about the manor. Stunning.
